MANUFACTURING

Incitec Pivot's Manufacturing Business is a world-class nitrogen-based chemicals manufacturing operation with plants in the United States of America, Canada, Mexico and Australia.

The manufacturing business is responsible for North America ammonium nitrate operations, Australia operations, which specialises in fertilisers, global initiating systems and global services including major project management.

Fertilisers and Industrial Chemicals

Incitec Pivot manufactures a range of fertiliser inputs and products including ammonium phosphates, ammonia, urea, sulphuric acid and superphosphates at six manufacturing sites across eastern Australia. Incitec Pivot is the only domestic manufacturer of ammonium phosphates and urea.

In addition, Incitec Pivot manufactures various industrial chemical products used in water treatment, process manufacturing and other industrial applications.

IPLDistribution Map

Phosphate Hill and Mt Isa

Incitec Pivot manufactures ammonium phosphate fertilisers (MAP and DAP) at its two plants in north-west Queensland.

Phosphate Hill, with an annual capacity of 975,000 tonnes, is uniquely positioned, combining world-class and low-cost manufacturing plants, its own phosphate rock reserve and ammonia production from gas sourced from long-term gas supply agreements. It is located 900 km west of Townsville where the Company operates export and warehouse facilities.

Phosphate Hill is complemented by a world-scale sulphuric acid plant at Mt Isa, 160 km to the north. Sulphuric acid is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of ammonium phosphates.

Gibson Island

Incitec Pivot produces ammonia, urea and ammonium sulphate at its Gibson Island plant in Brisbane, south-east Queensland.

Gibson Island has the capacity to manufacture 300,000 tonnes of ammonia, 280,000 tonnes of urea and 200,000 tonnes of ammonium sulphate, annually. The proximity of this plant to its domestic markets gives it a cost-competitive advantage, in addition to its long-term gas supply arrangements.

Geelong, Portland and Newcastle

As a major manufacturer of superphosphate fertilisers in Australia, Incitec Pivot currently operates two superphosphate plants in Victoria and one in New South Wales.

The Victorian plants are at Geelong, with capacity to manufacture 450,000 tonnes per year and Portland, with capacity of 250,000 tonnes per year.

The New South Wales plant at Newcastle also has an annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes. The Company has announced its intention to close this plant by September 2009 to allow for environmental site remediation and development.

Explosives

Since the acquisition of Dyno Nobel in June 2008, Incitec Pivot has incorporated the former Dyno Nobel ammonium nitrate and initiating systems facilities into its Manufacturing Business.

Ammonium Nitrate (AN) plants take raw materials: nitrogen, natural gas, ammonia, oxygen and water to create ammonium nitrate (AN) (NH4NO3).

Prilled AN or AN solution is the key raw material input to create explosives such as ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) and emulsion (water resistant explosives for use in wet boreholes). The Company's AN plants are located in the following countries:

  • Canada: Maitland, ON
  • Australia: QNP (50% JV), QLD
  • Turkey: Nitro Mak (50% JV)

Initiating Systems (IS) and assembly builds detonators, Nonel, Detcord, cartridge explosives (e.g. dynamite), boosters and assembles the products for customer specifications. IS facilities are located in the following countries:

  • United States of America: Simsbury, CT; Wolf Lake, IL; Graham, KY; Port Ewen, NY; Carthage, MO
  • Australia: Helidon, QLD
  • Mexico: Dinamita
  • South Africa: Sasol Dyno Nobel (50% JV), Johannesburg; DetNet (50% JV), Modderfontein.
